We have created our characters and the world they live in, now it’s time to come up with plots for our stories.

A good plot doesn’t need to be incredibly complicated or full of crazy stuff to be interesting (but it can be all those things, if you want it to). There are lots of ways to think about your plot, but a good place to start is coming up with something unusual that happens to your characters. It can be something really big and dramatic, like the start of a war or a huge meteor crashing into their town, or something really small, like running out of cereal in the morning or wearing the wrong hat.

After you figure out what your unusual thing might be, try and think of some interesting implications. Does wearing the wrong hat cause your character to be confused with someone else? Maybe they get mistaken for a famous thief, so they get hired and sent to do a job they’re totally unprepared for. Does the meteor that crashed into the town have a whole alien civilisation in it? Do our characters need to learn how to live with the aliens?

Work through all the possibilities of your plot to try and find the most interesting options for what happens next, then what happens after that, and so on, until you get to the end of your story. Try and think of what twists and turns could happen on the way (maybe they turn out to be brilliant at thieving after all, or the aliens get really bored and move away). When you get to the end, work out how you characters might have changed through all of this (maybe they didn’t change at all), and perhaps include one last surprise.

We aren’t going to write all of our story now, just try and work out what happens. Once you have done that, write your plot down (a few paragraphs will do) and draw an image that helps tell the story.

My plot is very simple. The different kingdoms of Foodonia have been at war for centuries, but they have never been able to conquer each other, so things have been in a relative balance. Everything changes when the Candy Floss People invent a way to domesticate their cloud-sheep and ride them into combat. This creates a huge advantage, and allows the fluffy warriors to conquer most of Foodonia. There are only three independent realms left: the Waffle Confederacy, the Orange Juice Archipelago and the Broccoli Forest; they must unite to avoid defeat but, after hundreds of years of fighting each other, that’s not as easy as it seems. Will they manage to come together and overthrown the sticky rule of the Candy Floss People or will they argue their way to total annihilation?

Tom’s plot is about Body Blips fighting invading bugs. You can read it here:

The worlds everyone has been creating are super amazing! Keep sending them to tibolota@gmail.com (or posting them on social media) and they’ll appear on our gallery over here.
